• Simple to assemble and use: Diya breast pump is very simple to use but do read the instructions on assembling or watch the assembling video in the video gallery section of the website: diyababycare.com. You can watch it also on our youtube channel: Diya babycare
  • Duckbill valve: * Important for suction

    • Make sure you keep good care of them. Do not clean them in hot/boiling water or place them at bottom of sterilizer for sterilizing.
    • When removing the duckbill valve for washing, remove from the smaller side and not the big knob in the center as that could damage the valve.
    • You may need to replace duckbill valve in about 4-12 weeks.
  • Pumping should be PAINLESS experience: If you are having pain while pumping, pause immediately. The main causes of pain for pumping is wrong flanges/breast shield size. Read our section on “Pumping should be comfortable experience” and identify the correct breast shield size. You can order extra sizes separately from our website/amazon.
  • Breast shield: Standard size is 24mm. The additional sizes are 21mm, 27mm, 30mm, 36mm. Additional sizes do not come with silicon massage insert. This is standard for other brands as well. It works effectively without the silicon massage insert.
  • Auto stop after 30 minutes of continuous use: The machine will auto stop after 30 minutes of use. It’s a feature in the pump.
  • If there is less suction, you have to do the following:

    • Check whether assembling is correct: Check that all pump parts have been properly assembled and that the duckbill valve is inserted into the connector tightly.
    • Silicone Diaphragm should be clearly moving: Make sure the diaphragm is moving up and down very nicely. If it’s not moving, it means the assembling is not correct. Watch the assembling video again.
    • If despite correct assembling, there is no suction, then:

      1. Duckbill valve: Change duckbill valve and retry. Do this step, this is very important. Duckbill valve should be tightly sealed in the connector.
      2. Tubes:

        • Use single tube for single side pumping and double tube for double side.
        • When double side pumping:
          • Use the double tube and ensure both ends are connected to cylinder cover.
          • When using the double tube, ensure that the center white part which has an arrow symbol should be left blank and the side opposite to arrow should be connected to the machine. While, the right and left side of the center white part should be connected to cylinder cover.
    • Battery string not left out: If you want to take out battery and then pink string has not been left out, then you can watch assembling video at ~1.02 minute as it shows how to take the battery out.
  • Compatible with other pumps:

    • Our pump bottles are compatible with Philip Avent bottles.
    • Medela breast shield also fits our pump
First time use:
  • We recommend to watch the assembling video prior to first use. It’s on the website under video gallery section or on YouTube.
  • Wash or sterilize all parts except the motor, battery, ac adapter and tubes (double and single).
  • Do not clean the parts in hot/boiling water.
Cleaning the pump parts:
  • Cleaning the parts:

You have toclean ALL parts except the motor unit, battery, ac adapter and tubes in any of the following methods. Note that milk does go into the tubes, so you do not need clean it.

    1. Washing in pool of water:

      • You can wash ALL other parts inlukewarm water in small pool of water/soapy water like you wash other dishes.
      • Avoid using boiling water to lengthen its lifetime.
    2. Sterilizer:

      • You can alternatively sterilize the parts in sterilizer.
      • But do not put the duckbill valve at the bottom of sterilizer as the heat is very strong, and could damage the valves easily.
  • Boiling: Avoid boiling the parts to lengthen their lifetime.
Care of accessories: * Important
  • When removing the duckbill valve for washing, remove from the smaller side and not the big knob in the center as that could damage the valve.
  • Do not boil the pump parts. Use lukewarm water to wash the parts to ensure long lasting.
  • Also do not put the duckbill valve at bottom of sterilizer when sterilizing as heat is stronger there.
Replacement of parts:
  • Accessories:

You will need to replace the accessories over time.
  • Duckbill valve:

    • Key part for suction, replace every few months: You will have to replace duckbill valves every few months. This is the case with all electric breast pumps. We have given extra duckbill valves in the package.
    • Washing duckbill valves: Wash the duckbill valve gently and take good care so that the duckbill valve lasts long. Please DON’T wash the duckbill valve with HOT water, it will get spoilt quickly.
How do I know if assembling is correctly?
  • Silicon Diaphragm movement: After assembling all the parts, you should switch on the pump and check that silicon diaphragm is moving up and down.
  • Clear movement: The movement should be very clear, only then it indicates that assembling has been done correctly.
  • If no movement: If the silicone diaphragm is not moving, watch the tutorials and fix any assembling issue. If no suction despite all the above then try change duckbill valve.
  • Contact customer care: If there is no suction still, then contact customer care.
Using pumping bra:
  • Wear pumping bra and massage while pumping: We recommend using pumping bra as it allows you to massage the breasts while pumping which can empty breasts quickly and also help to increase milk output. It will make pumping tireless. If you wear pumping bra, then you can hang the breast shield with bottle in it, and so the pumping will be hands-free and mobile
  • The fit needn’t be perfect: The pumping bra doesn’t need to fit perfectly. Its job is only to hold the breast shield.
  • Wear as daily bra: You can wear the bra as a daily bra as well so you don’t need to keep changing.
Memory function in the pump:
  • Memory function: There is memory function in the pump. The machine remembers and save the previous mode you were using before switching off the machine.
  • Machine starts with stimulation modealways: The pump will always start with the stimulation mode (pink screen).
  • First time use: So if you started the machine, first mode will be stimulation mode (pink screen) then if you press the switch mode button then it will go to expression mode (red screen) and if you press the switch mode button again then it will go to power expression mode (blue screen).
  • Subsequent use (Red/Blue):

    • Red mode: Now if you off the machine at expression mode (red screen), then when you restart the machine, the first will be stimulation mode (pink screen) and on pressing the switch mode button you will be in the expression mode (red screen).
    • Blue mode: If you off the machine at power expression mode (blue screen), then when you restart the machine, the first will be stimulation mode (pink screen) and on pressing the switch mode button you will be in the power expression mode (blue screen).
Pain while pumping?
  • Painful pumping, stop immediately: Pumping should not be painful. If you are having pain while pumping, then stop pumping immediately. Most probably you will need different breast shield size.
  • 24mm comes with the pump: The standard size provided with the pump is 24mm.Smaller or bigger size breast shield is available for purchase on Amazon or ourwebsite.
Identify correct Breast shield size:
  • Pump more milk with correct breast shield size: Diya breast pump kit comes with 24mm breast shield. If the standard nipple tunnel size is too small or too large, a better-fitting one will feel more comfortable and also likely to maximize milk production.
  • Do not pump with incorrect breast shield size: Pumping with incorrect breast shield can impact your milk flow by causing blocked milk ducts, pain while pumping or cuts on the nipple.
  • Diya breast shields are available in five sizes:
    • 21 mm
    • 24 mm (size included with all Diya breast pump kits)
    • 27 mm
    • 30 mm
    • 36 mm
  • Understanding your Breast Shield Size:

    • Check the nipples movement: To check your nipple-tunnel fit, watch your nipple during pumping. Then try to identify which of the below 3 options are you closet to.

    • Measuring your nipple diameter: To determine what breast shield size you need you will need to know your nipple size. You can measure your nipple by taking a ruler or measuring tape to measure the diameter of your nipple. It is the horizontal width across it. Measure the nipple alone, do not include the areola which is the outer edge around your nipple.

*Just the nipple diameter as shown in the diagram. Do not measure the areola.
    • Recommended breast shield size: Based on the nipple diameter measurement, the below sizes of Diya breast shield are recommended.

      • up to 17mm then you should use 21mm
      • up to 20mm then you should use 24mm
      • up to 23mm then you should use 27mm
      • up to 26mm then you should use 30mm
      • up to 32mm then you should use 36mm
    • Example:

If your nipple measures 19 mm in diameter, you should have breast shield size of 24 mm. If your nipple diameter measures 24 mm, your recommended size would be 30 mm.

    • Position your nipple in the center of the breast shield:

Once you have the correct size breast shield, be sure that you are placing your breast inside of it correctly. Your nipple should be perfectly centered in the middle of the breast shield. If it's off-center, even just a little bit, your nipple could feel bruised after your session is done.
How to know if you need a New Breast Shield?
  • Breast shield size is perfect if:

    • Your nipple is in the center of the breasts shield and it moves freely into its tunnel.
    • If you see a little space all around your nipple as it is drawn into the breast shield tunnel, you have a good fit.
    • Your breast should feel soft light after pumping.
    • There is no pain while pumping.
    • Your nipple and areola do not turn white or discolored while pumping.
  • Your Breast shield size is too small:

If breast shield is too small, you may experience any or more of the below, and you will need to get bigger size breast shield:
    • Your nipples are rubbing against the sides of the breast shield tunnel.
    • You feel pinching and squeezing of the nipple.
    • Your nipple or areola becomes white or discolored.
    • Milk production is lower, and your breasts feel full after pumping.
    • You will pain while pumping.
  • Your Breast shield size is too large:

If breast shield is too large, you may experience any or more of the below, and you will need to get smaller size breast shield:
    • Your areola is being pulled too much into the breast shield tunnel.
    • The nipple is painful, pinching, pulling or squeezing.
    • Milk production is lower, and your breasts feel full after pumping.
    • Your nipple or areola could become white or discolored while pumping.
Engorgement pain:
  • Initially there can be pain due to engorgement.
  • Use warm compress.
  • You can massage your breasts and retry pumping with a lower suction.
  • Ensure that the suction is not too strong.
Pumping technique:
  • Pumping time: Total pumping time about 10-15 minutes to fully empty breasts but can be faster/slower too.
  • Start with stimulation mode: Pump will always start with stimulation (pink mode) which lasts 2 mins bydefault, but you can always move to expression modes earlier if you want. Note very little milk will flow in stimulation mode (pink) so change to expression mode.
  • Choose your expression modes: Expression mode will be red or blue, recommend to find your best settings by trying. We recommend red mode.
  • 2-3 let downs to fully empty breasts: You will need 2-3 let downs to empty breasts. Its common feature in all electric breast pumps. So, alternate between stimulation then expression then stimulation then expression then stimulation and expression and so on.
  • An example can be:
    • Start with stimulation (pink) mode for 45 seconds-2 minutes
    • Then expression (red or blue mode) for 4 minutes
    • After 4 minutes back to stimulation mode for 45 seconds-1 minutes
    • Then expression again for 3 minutes
    • Again, stimulation mode 30-45 seconds and
    • Finally, in the end expression for 2-3 minutes.
  • Massage breasts: Ideally massage your breasts while pumping every few minutes.
